Cheese Dip Recipe

You can tell this recipe for cheese dip is older, as it lists one ingredient as “salad dressing” which is how they used to refer to mayonaise.  :)  Looks like a good recipe if you want something you can “make ahead” and refrigerate.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 ounces of Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 of a medium-sized onion, grated (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of Garlic Salt
  • 2 tablespoons of Milk
  • 1-1/2 ounces of very sharp Old English Cheese
  • 3 tablespoons of Salad Dressing (mayonaise)

Here is an old recipe for hot apple cider.  It says to perk like coffee, but these days I think making it in the crockpot is the way to go.  Do you make it in a coffee percolator?  How does it come out?  Have any other tips?  Let us know in the comments section!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons of Cloves
  • 1 teaspoon of Salt
  • 6 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1/2 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 3-1/2 quarts of Apple Cider

Here is a recipe for cheese balls.  My aunt has made these at Christmas for many years, and they are always a hit.  This is the traditional version of the recipe, but feel free to change it up a bit with different types of cheese, etc.  Let us know in the comments section what makes your cheese balls special if you make these!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 ounces of Cream Cheese
  • 2 Tablespoons of onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of garlic powder OR salt
  • 1/2 a cup of Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of Milk
  • Pecans, finely chooped (enough to coat  the outside of the cheese ball)

Potato Bread

This potato bread recipe is a less-potato-more-flour version.  There are many varieties/ratios floating around out there, but this is the one that was in my Mom’s collection.  Other potato bread variations even use wheat flour and red potatoes, but I haven’t gotten that adventurous yet!

Christmas Bread

This Christmas bread is a Julekage, or “yule bread.”  Like most traditional Christmas bread, it has candied fruit (in this case, candied cherries) and is hearty and spicy.  Unlike fruitcake, Christmas bread is an actual “bread,” with a base of a yeast mixture, and contains less dense on the candied fruits!

Kringle Recipe

“Kringla” (which what my family recipe collection calls this recipe) seems to be a midwestern variation of “kringle,” which is the actual name.  This kringle recipe has been around since at least the time my grandmother was a young housewife in Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1940s.  Where she got it before that, I don’t know!

Here is her kringle recipe passed down to my Mom then to me:

Beef Stew

October 4, 2009 by Sherry · 1 Comment

This is my Mom’s beef stew recipe.  She always made a double batch, so if this seems like too much, you can always halve it.  This doesn’t stay around long, in my house, though.  It’s so good it usually gets eaten for both lunch and dinner ’til it’s gone!

INGREDIENTS:

  • Enough Olive Oil to cover the bottom of the pot
  • 2 pounds of Stew Meat (or 2 pounds of beef tri-tips, cubed)
  • 2 cloves of Minced Garlic
  • 1 chopped Yellow Onion
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 tablespoons of Salt
  • 2 teaspoons of Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of Paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Black Pepper
  • A dash of ground allspice (or cloves, your choice)
  • 1 package of Baby Carrots (or 6 regular carrots, cut up)
  • 3 stalks of Celery, finely sliced
  • 8 red Potatoes, peeled and cut into 8 pieces each (approximately – just make them a good size for stew)
